El Bosque de Zárate está ubicado en la parte centrooccidental del Perú, en el distrito de Huarochirí, departamento de Lima. Ocupa la parte alta de la quebrada del río San Bartolomé, afluente del río Rímac. Existen pequeños caseríos a mayores altitudes del valle y en la parte baja se encuentra San Bartolomé, el poblado más grande de la zona. El parche de bosque comprende 120 ha de bosque seco de neblina que crece sobre laderas de fuerte pendiente. Consiste de agrupaciones mixtas dominadas por Oreopanax, Myrcianthes y Escallonia y está rodeado de vegetación arbustiva. Es un importante controlador de los fuertes deslizamientos o huaycos que ocurren durante las lluvias de verano. Tanto el bosque como la vegetación circundante son usados principalmente como zona de pastoreo de ganado vacuno y caprino. Es un lugar de gran atractivo ecoturístico para los habitantes de Lima. Numerosas ONGs han trabajado con la comunidad campesina de San Bartolomé, propietaria del área, y se ha creado la Reserva Ecológica Comunal. Es el bosque de este tipo donde se han realizado el mayor número de proyectos de investigación.

The Forest of Zárate is located in the centrooccidental part of Peru, in the district of Huarochirí, department of Lima. It occupies the high part of the gorge of the river San Bartholomew, affluent of the Rímac river.
